Welcome to 2017! In the spirit of new beginnings, I think it’s time to add one more resolution to everyone’s list. Choosing resolutions that focus on health and wellness are important, but don’t forget about resolutions to improve organize things around the house. I mean, what better time to revamp or upgrade certain aspects of your home than at the start of a new year?
Here are some easy life hacks that have made a big difference for me in my own home, and all are very simple. To start 2017 with an organized home, read on!
I love the start to a new year because it’s a good time to clean out the clutter and find new ways to implement creative (and good looking) storage around the house; the kind that gives you the luxurious feel we all dream of. Baskets serve many purposes when it comes to keeping your home organized, while also severing as elegant and useful décor. Try using them for shelf decoration, shelf storage, convenient floor storage and unique accent décor. I also recommend using baskets in various sizes and shapes to help complement the additional décor in a room.
For example, instead of allowing the mail to pile up on an entry table, replace that pile with a gorgeous basket or add a pair to the end of the living room sofa for additional blanket storage!
Time for a Closet Upgrade
Maintaining a well-organized, fully functional closet with a luxurious feel is a must for a “livable luxury” interior. We know the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can leave a closet in disarray, but now is the time to re-establish your organizational skills and give your closet an upgrade! You know what they always say, “out with the old and in with the new.”
An easy place to start is to recycle those old hangers that are no longer functional or practical, and replace them with new and efficient ones. Wouldn’t it be nice if they all matched, too! My favorites are by Real Simple and are super slim line and felt wrapped. They come in a couple of colors so you can get as close to your closet color as possible. A valet area in your closet can be a lifesaver, too. I never lose my keys or my phone because I have a staging area just for these items. Grab a felt lined tray or shallow felt lined bowl to stylishly capture the smaller, but imperative, pieces.
With the holiday season behind us, now is the time to give the playroom a little bit of attention… and make room for all those new goodies! One sure way to do this is to incorporate drawers and/or boxes and organize them by function. For instance, you could dedicate a drawer to arts & crafts, games, education or even a dress up area. Try using clear boxes to make it easier to see inside or you can go timeless with cubby storage. Master Bedroom Dream
One thing to keep an eye on this year is nightstands with integrated charging stations (like the one in the photo below). In my opinion, these are a dream come true! Instead of seeing an endless trail of wires hanging from the nightstand, minimize the cords and see just the design of the furniture. After all, minimizing clutter leads to ultimate luxury and who doesn’t like a lovely – and clean–nightstand.
Light Level Control Made Easy
On top of decluttering and reorganizing, livable luxury is all about comfort and convenience. Upgrading your basic lighting function is a sure way to accomplish both. As your needs change throughout the day, lighting should adapt as well (bright lights when you are reading a book, dim lights when it is time to relax). After all, the lighting in a room helps set the mood in a space.
Lutron provides personalized light control systems that recall your favorite settings and effortlessly transforms the lighting around you. If you are not ready to invest in a full Lutron lighting automation system (they are absolutely amazing) never fear. The best part is that you can order individual programmable Lutron switches are ready to go as soon as you plug them in – no complicated installation guidelines to follow. Yes, please!
With the start of every new year, there is the feeling of a “clean slate” or “new beginning”. Try channeling that energy into decluttering, revamping or reorganizing your home while looking for ways to add your own personal style. For more interior inspiration, follow me on Pinterest and Instagram!
